Module 6: Emotion Regulation for Overcontrolled Emotion Functioning
Emotion regulation in RO-DBT focuses on helping those of us who tend toward overcontrol (e.g., rigidity, emotional inhibition, perfectionism) become more flexible, open, and socially connected in how we experience and express emotions.
Rather than emphasizing reducing emotional intensity, RO-DBT targets the tendency to suppress or tightly control emotions. It teaches us that emotions play an important role in signaling safety, fostering connection, and guiding behavior—especially in social contexts. A central goal is to increase emotional expression in ways that are genuine and socially engaging, rather than masked or inhibited.
Key skills include cultivating openness to new experiences, practicing self-enquiry (questioning rigid beliefs and assumptions), and using social signaling—like facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language—to communicate emotions effectively. Individuals also learn to tolerate feelings of vulnerability, such as embarrassment or uncertainty, which often arise when loosening strict self-control.
Overall, emotion regulation in RO-DBT is about enhancing emotional flexibility and social connectedness, helping us move from emotional restraint toward more authentic, adaptive, and relationship-oriented expression.
