Module 4: Emotion Regulation I
Emotion regulation in DBT is managing and responding to emotions in a balanced and effective way. The goal isn’t to eliminate emotions, but to reduce their intensity when needed and prevent them from driving impulsive or unhelpful behaviors.
This skill set teaches us how to identify and label emotions accurately, understand what triggers them, and recognize how thoughts, physical sensations, and actions are connected. It also includes strategies to reduce emotional vulnerability—such as taking care of physical health, building positive experiences, and maintaining routines that support stability.
A key component is learning how to change emotional responses when they are not helpful. This might involve acting opposite to an emotion (for example, approaching something that causes unjustified fear) or using problem-solving when emotions are tied to real-life challenges.
Overall, emotion regulation in DBT helps us feel more in control of our emotional experiences, respond thoughtfully rather than reactively, and build a more stable and resilient emotional life
